10/20/2017

To celebrate the impact and importance of community service, Molina Healthcare of California recently recognized three local residents at its 3rd annual Community Champions Awards ceremony. The event included dinner, entertainment and an award presentation, where each winner received a trophy and a $1,000 grant to donate back to a nonprofit of his choice.

Molina was excited to honor Long Beach’s 2017 Community Champions:

  • Alex Herrera: A passionate teenager, volunteer and senior at Narbonne High School, who has given countless hours of his time to the Wilmington Community. He is the youngest team leader in the iHeart Wilmington Youth Group, where his leadership helps create a positive change in the lives of many. Additionally, Alex recruits new volunteers, chaperones the afterschool tutoring events and field trips, mentors peers, among other selfless acts.
  • John Newell: A recipient of the Rick Ford Humanitarian Awards from the International Imperial Court, Mr. Newell has spent over a decade educating and raising awareness for HIV and AIDS in the Long Beach community. As president of the AIDS Food Store since 2013, John has led many initiatives such as partnering with key community based organizations to ensure that those affected by HIV and AIDS are aware of the services available to them.
  • Robert Jones: Robert is a community leader who is devoted to helping the youth in Wilmington succeed. As a programing manager at Thriving Together, a tutoring program, he goes beyond his call of duty to provide children and their families with resources such as food and books. His hard work and dedication in helping the young adults has resulted in employment, internships and even college acceptance letters for the youth.
