8 facts to know about prostate cancer

1. After skin cancer, the most common cancer for American men is prostate cancer.

2. Most men who get prostate cancer survive it. Today, more than 3.1 million men who have been diagnosed are still alive.

3. All men are at risk. In the U.S., about 13 out of 100 get prostate cancer. Of these, 2 to 3 will die from it.

4. The risk is higher for Black men: 1 in 6 will develop prostate cancer. They are also twice as likely to die from it than other men.

5. Men with a father or brother with a history of prostate cancer are more than twice as likely to get the disease.

6. Age is another risk factor: The older the man, the greater the chance of prostate cancer.

7. The majority of men with prostate cancer have no symptoms. If you’re 50 or older, please talk to your doctor about prostate cancer screening.

8. Prostate cancer often grows so slowly, it doesn’t cause any health problems—especially in older men. In these cases, observation from a doctor is the only treatment needed.

Unlike with some cancers, changing your lifestyle probably won’t reduce your risk for prostate cancer. For the best suggestions on staying healthy and cancer-free, talk to your doctor.
